I’m trying a new way of editing today. I think it will give me a feeling of distance I need in order to narrow in on improving each piece as well as a better overall view of this series. I’ll share more of this process soon, if I find it helpful! #hannahbetzelfineart

Maymester progress: A week and a couple days left!

Maymester progress: A week and a couple days left! Goals I set in the beginning for the session:
1. Create a series that feels 100% me
2. Work on incorporating the figure into abstract painting
3. Create a shorthand in order to be clearer on what I want finished pieces to look like
How it’s going:
1. This series has felt 100% *mine.* I’ve been able to shut the world out, focus for hours at a time, and draw meaningful inspiration from a wide variety of sources. Narrowing in on what it is I like about what’s inspiring me is helping me feel more connected with my work and is giving me the ability to use the visual languages best suited to express what I want to say/explore.
2. Goal 2 is the most challenging for me, but I decided to focus on skill first here; depth & meaning will come once I have the technical skill. I’m seeing improvement and am testing several ways to incorporate the figure into abstract paintings. There have been more failures than successes here, imo, but even the failures have taught me lots.
3. I’m closer to creating a shorthand and I feel like I now understand how I can take that part a step further, which will save a lot of time and help me clarify the purpose of each painting/series as well as work out composition more on a small scale before going big.

Studio ASMR. Working on multiple pieces at once. Creating my own shorthand for larger pieces. Gesso on watercolor paper & layers upon layers of acrylic paint, painted paper collage, handmade paper, fabric, pastels. Will finish these over the next week!

31”x31” acrylic on canvas. || This was my final painting for Abstract Painting class and there are a total of 62 layers of paint on this piece. We were to create a Generative Painting. A Generative Painting is when an artist creates a list of instructions to follow in order to create a piece of artwork. Think AI before computers. I’ll post details explaining the process and the instructions I created on my poor neglected website soon! 😆 The inspiration behind this piece was the board game Monopoly and the five senses. 46”x60” diptych acrylic on canvas || Last painting for the semester for Figure Painting class! The project was to create a diptych or triptych (2 or 3 panel painting) sequential narrative in a surrealist style. Pretty happy with how it turned out! I may tweak it a bit, but that can wait. Just finished the critique and now on to drawing a double portrait that’s due tomorrow...😅

One hour-ish portrait from life (no it’s not Jesus😁) in figure drawing this morning and the last day of class for this semester! The eyes were giving me trouble and they’re still not quite right, but I enjoyed working on this. Next week are finals and I have to finish 2 paintings (one of which is a diptych, so 3 paintings 😳), a double portrait drawing, and I have an art history final covering the Italian Renaissance. If anyone needs me this weekend, don’t. I shall be covered in paint and listening to art history podcasts. Wish me luck!! 😅🤪 #finalsweek #portraitdrawings
